Who is Jonathan Van Ness?
Jonathan Van Ness is the star of the Emmy ® nominated, “Gay of Thrones” web series and celebrity hairstylist known for his unstoppable energy and witty commentary on everything from pop culture to real-time current events. Now starring in the Netflix reboot of “Queer Eye,” Jonathan joined the “Fab Five” as the groomer, hairstylist, and all-around self-care advocate, sharing his energy and love in eight new episodes premiering February 7, 2018. In 2016, “Gay of Thrones” (Funny or Die), Jonathan’s Game of Thrones recap show, received an Emmy nomination for ‘Outstanding Short Form Variety Series. Since 2015, he has hosted the “Getting Curious” podcast, a bi-weekly exploration whereby listeners can learn alongside Jonathan as he interviews experts in their respective fields about all things interesting!
While Jonathan loves a good performance opportunity, his first love is hair. He maintains bi-coastal clientele, at his own L.A.-based salon Mojo Hair (alongside his fabulous partner, Monique Northrop) and at Hairstory Studio in New York City. After graduating from The Aveda Institute, Jonathan moved to Los Angeles to be an assistant at the famed Sally Hershberger Salon. Since assisting, he started building clientele including cast members of True Blood and Game of Thrones. His signature looks have been featured in digital or print magazines like People, Paper, Vogue Italia and the red carpets of New York Fashion Week, the Oscars, Emmys, and Grammys. Current notable clientele includes Margaret Cho, Tess Holliday, and Denise Bidot.
Raised in Quincy, Illinois, Jonathan’s family has deep roots in the local newspaper and television industry. He was the first modern-day male cheerleader at his high school, and even cheered with the NCAA Division I powerhouse University of Arizona squad! Jonathan is a certified yoga instructor and can be found most mornings working out at Equinox.
